Every time I read something about the autism spectrum and spectrum behavior, I see things that are like me... and things that aren't. I think back to things I said and did and thought when I was much younger, and some of them seem spectrum-like... and some of them don't.

I've about concluded that either I'm on the spectrum but at the very low end of it, or I was one of the lucky ones who learned to compensate as I got older, and so really don't fit that description any more.

The autistic spectrum is really multi-dimensional, not just "more or less". But there are certainly "subclinical autistics"; people who otherwise fit the personality profile and characteristic preferences, but have come out with no functional disability (in that respect, anyway). "No disability, no diagnosis".

I think there is a central stereotype for "the autistic type", but between the variations we start with and the differences in the environment we have to deal with, well, that's a lot of range for development. Which makes it really hard to draw good generalizations, but when has that ever stopped anyone from drawing generalizations?
